Throughout the year, I learned the nine categories of Universals of Culture. The nine universals of culture are: 1) Material Culture, 2) Arts Play and Recreation, 3) Language and Nonverbal Communication, 4) Social Organizations, 5) Social Control, 6) Economic Organizations, 7) Education, 8) Conflict and Warfare and 9) World View.
Below are the definitions of each category of the universals of culture. Listed with each definition is a schema connection.
Remember, universals of culture means that all cultures have these elements...it's what defines them as a society! As you explore the universals of culture for each of the different regions I have chosen to study in-depth, you will see how these universals of culture shape each society.
Material Culture is what the culture makes and then uses. For example, the U.S. makes phones and then the people of the U.S. use those phones to communicate. The company that invented the iPhone is in the U.S.
Schema Connection: Most of the people in my family have iPhones. We use them to communicate and relax by listening to music and playing games. We also use them to learn from the internet.
Arts, Play, and Recreation is what people of a culture do in their free time and how they creatively express themselves.
Schema Connection: I creatively express myself by building legos. I like to build buildings and cities. In my free time, I also play video games like Minecraft where I can creatively build different worlds.
Language and nonverbal communication is how people communicate with and without words.
Schema Connection: I use English to communicate with my friends and family. I am also learning Spanish so I can communicate with a wider variety of people. An example of nonverbal communication would be sign language.
Social Organization is how people in a culture organize themselves into groups. For example, are you a movie fan or T.V. fan; a football fan or basketball fan? Do you like the Chicago White Sox or the Chicago Cubs? All of these are examples of how people in our culture could organize themselves into various groups.
Schema Connection: I would group myself in a musician social organization because I play the the baritone and bass guitar. I would also group myself with gamers because I like to play video games.
Social Control is the way society makes sure people follow the rules and laws. The police and other officials typically enforce and make sure people follow the laws made by a society.
Schema Connection: At Skate Country, they have staff who wear referee jerseys and they make sure no one is breaking their rules so everyone is safe at their establishment. Also, the police enforce the laws of the U.S. One example is speeding. If you get caught speeding, then you get a ticket from the police because they want to make sure that the roads are safe.
Economic Organizations are the ways that a culture distributes and uses their material culture.
Schema Connection: For example, my dad works at Faxitron and Tucson Medical Center (TMC) consumes his products to help patients get healthy or remain healthy. Within this connection, there are two universals of culture examples: material culture and economic organization. The material culture would be my dad making the X-ray machines at Faxitron. The economic organization part of it would be TMC consuming my dad's X-rays and then using them to take X-rays of people.
Education is how people learn from their ancestors to give them knowledge they have. All cultures have some type of knowledge that they can pass down from generation to generation to keep their culture alive. One example of knowledge that is passed down to younger generations is parents teaching their babies to talk.
Schema Connection: I go to school to learn. The education that I gain in school, I will be able to use when I am older. One can learn in two ways; by watching then doing, or having someone tell you and then you read about it.
Conflict and Warfare is how cultures settle arguments, either violently or nonviolently.
Schema Connection: My brother and I settle our fights with words most of the time! Another example of conflict and warfare is the police. There are situations where the police settle domestic arguments between people or groups.
World View is the big ideas of a culture.
Schema Connection: For example, the President had a big idea so that all people could have access to affordable healthcare. Also, Martha McSally has a big idea of finishing the border wall.
