Ancient Mesopotamia was called ¨The Fertile Crescent¨ This nickname was given to this region because the soil was rich and fertile and the area of land was shaped like a crescent! The physical geography of this ancient land was important in shaping this culture in many ways. Most notably, the physical geography helped the Ancient Mesopotamian economy!
Mesopotamia literally means "land between two rivers". As the name says, Mesopotamia was situated between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. This is where the soil was so rich and allowed for abundant farming. During the rainy season, floods would come and most likely wash out the growing crops. Ancient Mesopotamian people learned how to control the flooding by using irrigation.
The northern part of the land had mountains, streams, rivers and plains. The Fresh water would flow from the mountains into the rivers and streams.
The southern part of Mesopotamia was drier and had flat plains. The southern area had the benefit of the two rivers in mesopotamia's physical geography.
