Ancient Greek culture was no stranger to conflict and warfare within its own civilization. The most well-known of conflicts is that between Athens and Sparta. Sparta and Athens were two poleis in Ancient Greece. They were once strong allies. Athens, one day, attacked Sparta without warning because Sparta had many more allies. This attack gave birth to a massive, long-lasting conflict. Athens, Sparta, Corinth and Thebes were city-states within Ancient Greece. These poleis were always fighting one another over borders.
Another well-known conflict that involved the Ancient Greeks was the Peloponnesian War (431 BC-404 BC). This war was between the Persian Empire and Ancient Greece. The Persians attacked Ancient Greece because they wanted more land for their empire. By the end of this war, Greece was worn out and poor. They ended up surrendering to the Persian Empire.
