Prehistory The Paleolithic Era is known as the Old Stone Age. The Neolithic Era is known as the New Stone Age. See how cultures ¨advanced¨ from the the beginning of the Paleolithic Era to the end of the Neolithic Era!
Prehistory is defined as: "human history in the period
before recorded events, known mainly through archaeological discoveries, study, research, etc.; history of prehistoric humans." (6)
In this page you will learn about my second favorite unit, Prehistory. This will help you know more about your past and it will help you know more of how we came here.
Paleolithic was the first part of the Stone Age. The Paleolithic Period was from 40,000 B.C.-8,000 B.C. The Paleolithic Period lasted about 32,000 years. I would not want to live in this time period because I like having this advanced technology that we have in the 21st century.
Hunters and Gatherers would be similar to butchers and farmers. The men of a tribe would be the hunters and women would be gathers. The hunters would hunt and kill wild animals, while the gatherers would collect and prepare wild plants, seeds and berries. However, there were some exceptions to this rule. If the men and women were together out hunting and gathering and they came across a lot of useful wheat then the men would help the women gather the wheat and they would take the food back to their tribe.
Schema Connection: I would rather just go to my grocery store than have to find my own food. Did I mention that you could potentially be killed when you are hunting big game such as a mammoth!?!
Nomads When most people think of Nomads, they think of people who don't have homes. However, it's not! Nomads were people who traveled around with the food and the crops. Their homes were usually made from mud and some wood. Dried mud is like concrete when it is dry. There could also be nomads that live in caves as their home instead of making homes that they are going to leave later. Innovation is part of what lead the Paleolithic Age into it's second stage, the Neolithic Age.
Innovation is taking something old and and adding upgrades to that object. The nomads innovated their houses to make them stronger so they could withstand the forces of Mother Nature. Stronger houses meant less rebuilding!
Schema Connection: For example, if I had a Lego car and I was having a Lego war with my brother, then I would want to innovate that car and give it weapons and prepare it for Lego war.
Cargo was all that the Nomads could take by hand when they moved around (the bag was not invented yet). For example, in modern times, if a person moved, what would they choose to take with them if they could only take what they could carry? But, with innovation coming into play in the Neolithic Era, all the cargo was about to change!
Neolithic was the second part of the Stone Age. This is when Prehistoric people started innovating to make life easier! For example, hunters and gatherers became farmers and herders. Everything was changing; people's everyday routines, the climate was getting warmer, all the animals were leaving, and the water was rising because the glaciers were melting. For the Prehistoric people who live in both time periods, this change must have been hard!
Sedentary is the opposite of nomad. Sedentary is when a person stays in one place and has a house and land. Because people were starting to become sedentary, they weren't moving around like nomads to get food. The hunters and gathers transitioned into farmers and herders to provide a food source. The farmers could grow wheat and they could grow beans they could grow a lot of food if they had enough seeds.
Schema connection: A lot of people in the U.S. are sedentary because they live in the same place their whole lives. There are people that live a nomadic life in today's society. People who are in the military are sometimes considered nomads.
Domestication is when you take something and adapt to your pleasure. One example is a stalk of corn was once only as big as your pinky finger, but, people who lived through the prehistoric times domesticated these small corn plants and made the corn bigger so one ear corn could feed more people. Also, dogs were domesticated to help hunt in the paleolithic times.
Schema connection: I have two dogs that were domesticated by our ancestors.
The Neolithic Revolution is the transition from Paleolithic to Neolithic ways of life.
Schema connection: I have a routine of going to all 8 of my classes a day, but my routine and class schedule changed for three week's during the AZ Merit Standardized Test. This is just like the Neolithic Revolution! There is nothing bad about the Neolithic Revolution. It's not like a big fight, it is just big changes! I, like most people would not like being part of the Neolithic Revolution this because change is not easy!
Specialization of Labor is when each person of a tribe has a specific job. One or two people might be blacksmiths, while someone is a tool builder. Everyone has a job to help make a civilization work smoothly. I would like being part of a civilization that had specialization of labor because I wouldn't have to do everything all by myself! I would have people helping me get the job done.
