Ancient Mesopotamian civilization spanned over 3,000 years! During this time, there were many types of governments that ruled this land. Government types were influenced by the people coming into Mesopotamia. In class, we discussed two of the types of government that ruled over this land at different times.
Ancient Mesopotamia was ruled by a tyranny, also know as dictatorship. A tyrannical rule is when one person is invested with total power over the people and everything in a certain area. Tyranny was used by the emperors in there empires so they could make sure that they had a successful society. They also wanted to insure that they would be well prepared for an attack on their empire.
The second type of government we learned about in class was a theocracy. A theocracy is government ruled by religious authority. For example, if you lived in a city-state and there was a priest-king leading you, then would be living in a theocracy.
