The Ancient Egyptian civilization is over 2,000 years old (10)! The Ancient Egyptians invented a lot of the everyday items we use today, including makeup, toothbrushes and toothpaste! Lets take a look at the universals of culture that shaped the Ancient Egyptians!
Material Culture: Tools for carving and building tombs
Arts, Play and Recreation: Wall paintings and playing handball
Language and Nonverbal Communication: Hieroglyphs
Social Organization: The social stratification triangle
Social Control: Pharaohs
Economic Organization: Farmers
Education: Their parents and other adults
Conflict and Warfare: Tomb raiders stealing the Egyptian mummies
World View: They wanted to know what it was like in other parts of the world.
The Universal of culture that stood out to me was social control. Pharaohs were the social control. Everyone acted as they were supposed to when there was a pharaoh around. However, there were some exceptions...tomb raiders. They were usually the only ones who did not follow the rules.
The Egyptians believed that their pharaohs had placed boobie traps in the pyramids. If someone tried to enter the tomb in an attempt to steal the riches buried with the pharaoh, they would most likely would never come out! I was amazed at how one pharaoh could have kept all those people in ancient Egypt under control!
