There were many poleis (city-states) in Ancient Greece. Each polis was responsible for choosing the way they governed, so there were many different types of government in Ancient Greece. There were tyrannies, monarchies, and democracies.
Athens was the first polis that introduced a democratic way of life. A democracy is when all the citizens are able to contribute to the way the polis is governed. After Athens started the democracy, many of the other poleis followed in Athens' footsteps and also tried to become allies. We live in a democracy in the U.S. Citizens that are old enough, elect officials to run our cities, states and our country. Our laws are made by elected officials as well (Representatives and Senators).
